Think Before you Measure Symposium. University of Sydney, New Law School building.
The University of Sydney is pleased to present a symposium with the theme Think before you measure to be held on 29-30 June 2011, and now invites registrations.

A decision will be made soon, in association with the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, about a session on the revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) on 1 July.

Why the theme of 'Think before you measure'? The fields of health, functioning and disability present many measurement challenges. Meaningful, interconnected research, measurement and information systems rely on agreements on basic concepts, definitions and classifications. Person-centred practice, inter-disciplinary communication, cost effective services – all demand such basic conceptual clarity. New developments in health and community services systems require renewed effort to apply these basic building blocks of information to policy and practice, so as to meet the main information needs of diverse stakeholders.

Program overview International and Australian speakers will talk about current challenges and developments such as: care and funding models for rehabilitation, eligibility for services, and new developments in the 'family' of classifications, including those for health interventions, patient safety and traditional medicine. A number of panels will ensure that there is vigorous discussion of a range of views on these topics. The symposium is taking advantage of the presence in Sydney (for meetings on 27-28 June) of international experts in health, functioning and disability measurement and classification.
