Chairperson, A/Prof. Johanna Westbrook
Deputy Director, Clinical Centre for Health Informatics Official opening of the conference by Her Excellency Prof Marie Bashir AC, Governor of New South Wales.

After the National anthem was played, A/Prof. Johanna Westbrook, Chairperson of the morning session formally welcomed the Governor of New South Wales Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC to the 24th Conference of the Health Information Management Association of Australia. Her Excellency praised the Health Information Management (HIM) profession. She commented on the wide range of issues that the profession has coped with such as; medico-legal and privacy. Her Excellency stated that the conference theme of 'Building Bridges' accurately describes this profession, anticipating future needs and responding to them. Prof Bashir continued to commend the profession on its educational standards, professional journal, students and international affiliations and meticulous HIM systems. In conclusion, Her Excellency declared the conference open and wished delegates well. Conference Convenor Anne-Marie Hadley presented Her Excellency with a bouquet of flowers, which included some of her favourite flowers - white japonica.


Professor Bruce H. Barraclough OA

Keynote Topic: Health Care Safety and Quality: An Agenda for Improvement

Professor Barraclough is Chairman of the Australian Council for Safety and Quality in Health Care. He informed delegates of the current Safety and Quality agenda. He stated that all groups in health are prepared to move forward in safety, instead of 'just do it' (Nike) he stated that they were prepared to 'just move forward,' to move away from a culture of blame to quality improvement. Prof Barraclough highlighted the importance of the HIMs role in data collection as decisions are made on good information. Health, he stated was recognised as being more complex than space travel. Major issues that needed to be addressed included; indigenous health, medication safety, sentinel event and incident reporting, healthcare complaints, coronial reporting. He stressed that improved data sets is the key to better information for decision making.


Information technology: Achieving efficiencies in clinical and corporate management.
Professor Steven C. Boyages, CEO Western Sydney Area Health Service, Westmead, NSW

Professor Boyages presented a paper on achieving efficiencies in clinical and corporate management. In summary, he mentioned several points that should borne be in mind when implementing new IM/IT projects. These are :

  • Serve the business (underpinning organisation function)
  • Identify business, information and technical requirements
  • Quantifiable - hard and soft points, understand all the costs
  • Promote business process mapping
  • Map the process
  • Understand the patient flow
  • Share agreement
  • Define IT solution
  • Invest strategically in IT
  • Health Clinical IT Excellence (Health CITE) for testing evaluating new innovations e.g. wireless ward, voice etc
  • Information follows the patient
  • Understand the context
  • Health care transactions
  • Mobile workforce
  • Broadband necessity
  • Wireless technology
  • Manage Risk
  • Strategic, technical, technical and operational

Dr. Robert Wooding PhD

Keynote Topic: Informatics Infrastructure - a foundation for "bridging from the present to the future".
Dr Robert Wooding is the current head of the Information and Communication Division in the Department of Health and Ageing. The Division is responsible for e-Health, Health Information Management, Online Communications and Media and Public Relations work. The Division manages important Commonwealth health information initiatives such as HealthConnect, MediConnect and Health

Insite. Dr Wooding presented his thoughts on the future role on the HIMs.

He stated that there would be more involvement in the Electronic Health Records arena, that the workforce would be more IT aware, involved in standards development.
